Tips for completing the map on page 12, shown above: 

   Tell students to first label the former Confederate states as shown, using a regular #2 pencil, before using their color pencil set to shade in the states.  (Color pencils add a slightly waxy finish that is hard to write over.) 

   Remind students they need to print very neatly, and to make the labels dark enough to stand out.  Also remind students to shade the states with their color pencils very lightly - dark shading makes it hard to see the borders and labels on a paper map. 

   It's best to get students in the habit of using the same color scheme as shown in the finished maps on this site.  Point out that there is one color they should never use for land areas when making maps: the color blue.  Areas colored blue on a map are almost always assumed to be a body of water.
